This reminds me of how I used to think of the afterlife when I was in elementary school. At first, the whole idea of eternity really frightened me, possibly more-so than an actual end of consciousness. After all, the whole idea of infinity is pretty suspicious. I imagined, no matter whether you went to heaven or hell, that it must’ve pretty much amounted to waiting forever for the other shoe to drop. Sure, you still exist now, but for how much longer, really?
The only thought that comforted me was the idea that a true eternal reward would be to become a god yourself and get to create your own private universe. Of course, you wouldn’t want to be the practical old detached Judeo-Christian type of deity, but rather an in-your-face Grecco-Roman god, possibly with friends and relatives joining along to round out your pantheon. That way you could create a world, inhabitants and events, but also get to join in on the fun, screw around with them and generally cause all the kinds of mayhem you couldn’t even accomplish, much less get away with, even in your wildest mortal dreams.
Come to think of it, I still like to believe this might be possible with enough good behavior. Maybe I should start going back to Church more often after all…
