Hey guys, I’m going to put together a few games of Avalanche, Charley’s game from Frank’s class last semester, this weekend. I’ll be observing the game and will ask you some questions once you’ve finished. This is all work that I’m doing for my thesis, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

After coming home this evening, I thought I might want to clarify what I meant in saying that the only interesting games ever released on cell phones were Konami’s port-job of the original two MSX Metal Gear games (both of which were again redone for the “Subsistence” version of MGS3). In fact, I’m largely wrong. There have been many interesting games released on cell phones besides my beloved Metal Gear. Off the top of my head, there’s been puzzle games like Tetris, arcade games like Pac-Man and Q-Bert, a few adventure titles like Prince of Persia and a couple of shooters in the 1941 vein. However, all of these have one thing in common with my Metal Gear observation, and I’m sure that all of you should be able to tell what it is:
NONE OF THEM WERE DESIGNED FOR CELL PHONES.

I know this is a little late, but I’ve not had much time to play until recently. Anyway, In the couple min or so I get to play games these days, I typically log into WoW to play the new Burning Crusade, or kill the hell out of zombies in Dead Rising.
Dead Rising is quite simple, but oddly appealing. I’m not sure if it’s the zombie theme, the sound design / weapon design or a combo of the 2. It’s just pretty fun to sit down with for a handful of minutes and hack away at things.
WoW : BC has sort of re-kindled a bit of my affection for WoW. It’s not anything super spectacular.. but there is some nice new content in Outland. More importantly, there are a lot of people who want to check out this new content.. so grabbing a group is easy and quick for the moment.

Intro
I just played Super Columbine Massacre.
For kicks, I also played http://www.deanforamericagame.com/play.html
because it was just as misguided.
It helped me think over a few things in my mind with “serious games.”.
People do not seem to understand the power of play mechanics.
Two prominent moments that changed probably everybody’s lives for a while, whether or not they intended to have that effect, are Tony Hawk Pro Skater, and Final Fantasy.

I just finished Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2(KotOR2) last weekend and 2 weeks before that, KotOR1. The first one was an incredibly enjoyable experience and well deserving of the awards and praise I’ve heard about it. The sequel was pretty much identical to first save for the plot, which for me was changed enough to consider it worth recommending if you liked how the first game was presented. What I’m upset about is, strangely enough, something I only realized towards the very end of the second game. I found myself continually checking the bodies of my fallen enemies for credits, equipment and datapads.

For those of you that didnt play the first God of War, I think it was one of the top 5 games (that I played) on the PS2. You can rent it and beat it in 10 hours, but you will probably want to play through it again in the hard mode.
So what brings this talk of the other GoW…
David Sirlin has a post about the new GoW, which also looks amazing. Here is the article… http://www.sirlin.net/archive/god-of-war-2-reviews/
And two designers, Eric and Derek, are answering questions in the comments… pretty interesting stuff.
