Also, all the Galaga talk made me a little misty thinking about Gamma Bros as well. Have you guys seen how amazing, sensible, smooth, and emotional the lives system in that game is? Gamma Bros is one of those videogames that can make you cry, but I haven't seen anyone else online have a similarly intense experience.

Oh, and Super Fami Shiren: FTW. That game's a bitch.

Sorry, not in a terribly "holding-forth" mood tonight.

*But* I would like to say congratulation on another of one of the finest podcasts I have in my roster.

Really, sincerely; don't change a thing. It's great.

On the Rohrer thing: somehow I agree with what Anna says, while appreciating Rohrer's perspective.

My take on it is that I'm one of Anna's masochistic gamers. From our point of view (of wanting to have a perfectly balanced love-hate relationship with a deliciously abusive game, ie my relationship with Metanet), Rohrer knows us, but is catering to others.

I won't be able to play his DS game, but it certainly sounds intriguiing, no? Mainstream news-game? How's that happen?

(I hope he releases the table-top prototype as a Cheapass board-games style, $5-10 mailorder thing. You can save money in development by instructing purchasers to use grains of rice or millet or whatever the fuck you hippy-vegan-sustainability wonks stave of death with as counters. Everyone has dice.

What else is there? The board? You could make that a free 300 DPI pdf download, and advertise your mechanics to the game design wonks (and poor people).

You guys have seen Into the Night, right?

Worth a viewing, if you're so inclined.

Yeah, Rohrer is very smart, and in many ways has already moved beyond the simplest version of his early position. Having said that, Anna's critique was dead on, and beautifully expressed.

Finally got around to listening; awesome stuff, Charles and Anna! Only one note I had. On the discussion of Rohrer, there's one point where you'll really right and really wrong. On the one hand, I agree with the utter frustration at hearing him get up in front of a room full of developers, show a few games like The Marriage, Ico, and Braid that have "gotten as far as we've gotten," and then assert that we're not at art yet. He's completely wrong on that count. As you say, the cultural value of games is thousands of years old and universally taken for granted.

But the idea that he's looking for outside validation from a staid, high art establishment that doesn't understand the medium is off. I watched a discussion between Rohrer and two professors who were both rambling at him about how he needed to be more avant-garde (and to realize that "he is" the avant-garde). He just sat there shaking his head. I think he's somebody, like Blow, whose public image has become radically divorced from the actual character of his ideas and desires.

When he says we're not at art, it's a challenge. When he says we need to prove our worth to Ebert, it's humorous, angry self-motivation. This is what iconoclasts do.

Loved the first episode, and eagerly downloading the new one right now.

However, I felt I should inform you that the iTunes Store link is still a duplicate of Episode 1.

Keep up the good work. (Seriously; no sarcasm!)

Hey Kynes, thanks for the heads-up! Should be fixed now.

Thanks for the feedback Daphny! We try not to get too technical, but I suppose I have a hard time judging because it's always interesting to me to hear designers talking about their games. We'll definitely keep that in mod for future episodes!
